First Things First: Let Go of Worry, Trust in God

August 2024

In Matthew 6:25-34, Jesus addresses one of the most common struggles we face today—worry. He challenges us not to be consumed by thoughts about what we will eat, drink, or wear, but instead to seek God’s Kingdom first. Jesus points out that our Heavenly Father, who takes care of even the birds and flowers, surely knows what we need and will provide for us.

Life can feel overwhelming at times. With busy schedules, financial concerns, and the constant demands of everyday life, it’s easy to fall into the trap of worrying. But Jesus reminds us: “Can you add even one hour to your life by worrying?” (v.27). Worry doesn’t change anything—it only robs us of peace.

Jesus calls us to make a choice: Will we serve God or let material concerns dominate our lives? Bob Dylan’s song, “You gotta serve Somebody,” echoes this truth—we all serve something. Jesus says we cannot serve both God and money (v.24). We must put God first, trusting that when we do, everything else will fall into place.

So, what does it mean to “seek first His kingdom”? It means prioritizing God in our lives. In practical terms, this can look like starting our day with prayer, studying His Word, attending church regularly, and trusting Him with our finances. When we align our priorities with God’s will, we experience the peace that comes from knowing He’s in control.

As we approach each day, especially when we face uncertainties, let us remember the words of Jesus: “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself” (v.34). Each day has enough trouble of its own. Instead of allowing anxiety to dominate, we are invited to trust God fully with every aspect of our lives, knowing that He cares deeply about our needs.

The freedom Jesus offers us is not just from worry but also from the grip of materialism. By seeking God first, we find peace, joy, and righteousness—not in what we possess, but in our relationship with Him.

Let’s take on the challenge Jesus gives us: to replace worry with action, to trust God with our needs, and to live as citizens of His Kingdom. When we do, we discover that all these things—food, clothing, and more—will be given to us in His perfect timing.
