Coming Home – The Birth of the Church

March 2024

In Acts 2:36-47, we witness the beginning of the first Christian community. It’s a story about coming home—coming home to Jesus and finding a new family among believers. This isn’t just the start of a church building; it’s the birth of a vibrant community filled with the Holy Spirit and dedicated to Jesus Christ.

It begins with Peter’s powerful sermon at Pentecost, where he boldly declares that Jesus, who was crucified, is now the risen Lord. This message deeply moved the listeners; they were “cut to the heart” and asked, “What shall we do?” Peter’s response was simple yet profound: “Repent and be baptized.” This call to repentance is the essence of the early church’s message. It wasn’t about religious rituals but about a genuine inner transformation and surrender to Jesus.

What happened next was remarkable. The people didn’t just respond with words—they took action. They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayer. These four pillars became the foundation of their new way of life together. They lived as one family, sharing their possessions, caring for one another, and becoming known for their love and generosity. This way of living was so attractive that it drew others in; people saw something genuine, something different, and were compelled by this new lifestyle.

What can we learn from this? The early Christians lived a radically different lifestyle. They were not focused on their own interests but on God and each other. They shared a deep sense of community and a common mission. Their church wasn’t just a place they attended; it was a family they belonged to. This is the power of coming home to Jesus—a transformation from the inside out that becomes visible in how we live.

At International Christian Fellowship Woerden (ICF Woerden), we aim to be a place where people can experience this kind of homecoming in Christ’s love. A place of beautiful diversity, where people from different backgrounds come together to follow Jesus and live out His values. We strive to create a community where everyone feels seen, loved, and accepted.

The invitation is open: Have you asked Jesus to enter your life yet? Coming home to Him is the first step toward a life filled with purpose and connection. Let’s take that step together and build a community that makes a real difference.
